Junior Introduction

Caves Beach SLSC junior members are provided with an educational experience in a wide range of activities which will prepare them to become a lifesaver in the senior movement.

The skills and knowledge range from identification of common beach safety rules and basic first aid, including resuscitation,  surf skills, and surf sports.

Each age group has an award to gain so that at the age of 13 after successfully completing their Surf Lifesaving Certificate, they are able to assist as a junior member of a beach patrol – the very essence of what the Surf Lifesaving movement is all about. That is providing efficient and effective surf rescue patrols on our beaches.

The junior movement can be a very rewarding experience for the whole family. Not only do the children learn important beach and water skills and enjoy the friendships that come with belonging to a club, their parents can also gain valuable knowledge and discover personal satisfaction in participating. Parents are also encouraged to consider participation in the full range of Surf Club activities such as gaining their Surf Lifesaving Certificate to their Bronze Medallion.

At Caves Beach our juniors participate generally on Sunday mornings with a BBQ on some occasions throughout the season.

Parents are also encouraged to assist on Sundays by either being an Age Manager, a Water Safety Officer, non-swimming beach events helper or just a general helper. There are many jobs to be done that also require expertise possessed by some of our parents ie. board repairs, knowledge of plumbing, carpentry etc. Hands are always needed in the BBQ area and particularly on occasions like hosting a carnival or special functions.

We appreciate the generous donations received from time to time from sponsors, however, a certain amount of fundraising is essential for our very existence and a dedicated effort by all makes it easier for everyone. Just ask how you can help.

Awards and Pointscore System

PARTICIPATION AWARD-All Age Groups U/6 toU/14

A participation award is given to all children who have attended and participated in 50% or more of our club days.

Some of our registered children may not be able to attend carnivals due to proficiency criteria placed upon us by Hunter Branch. Therefore it is not a requirement to attend carnivals to receive a participation award, BUT ALL CHILDREN THAT ARE ABLE ARE ENCOURAGED TO BE PART OF A CAVES BEACH TEAM AT THESE EVENTS.

If a child does not qualify on attendance then parents have the option to purchase the award for their child at the end of the season. The committee will contact those families who may not make the 50% cut off before Presentation Day.

Under 6 and Under 7 children are not involved in point score days.  Their participation is on a surf education and activities basis only.

Codes of Behaviour

Parents Code.

Do not force an unwilling child to participate.

Remember, children are involved in Nippers for their enjoyment, not yours.

Encourage your child to always play by the rules.

Teach your child that honest effort is as important as winning so that results are accepted without undue disappointment.

Help your child with skills development and good sportsmanship. Never ridicule or yell at your child for making a mistake.

Children learn by example. Applaud all good efforts from any competitors.

Do not publicly question an officials judgment and never their honesty.

Recognise the value and importance of volunteer coaches. They give up their time and resources to provide our children with these recreational activities.

Competitors Code.

Participate for the fun of it, not to please your parents or coach.

Play by the rules.

Never argue with an officials decision.

Control your temper.

Work equally hard for yourself and your club. Your club will benefit and so will you.

Be a good sport. Applaud all good efforts by yourself or a competitor.

Treat all competitors, as you would like to be treated.

Remember the aims of the club are to have fun, improve your skills and to keep healthy. Don’t be a show off.

Co operate with your Age Manager, your coach and team mates, for without them we don't have a Club.
